Situated on the Pacific coast in the south of Nicaragua, just 2-1/2 hours from Managua, it is the favorite weekend spot of Nicaraguans.

During the periods of Christmas, New Years and the popular Semana Santa (pre-Easter holy week), thousands of national and international tourists overflow the town, and the Port becomes a bustling place with music and parties at the bars and restaurants along the seaside.

While all this happens along the beachfront, in the midst of the town and just one block from the ocean, at the Hotel Colonial calm and tranquility reigns as our guests enjoy sitting in traditional rocking chairs or in the lush garden in the nostalgic Ranchito del Abuelo.

The town has perked itself up over the past years, with the dock area taking on a new shine and Gaspar Garcia Laviana park in front of the church remembering San Juan´s beloved priest who took up a gun and died in the war three decades ago.

The streets themselves reflect a laid back holiday mood as people meander or ride bicycles on the newly paved streets….past the many internet spots, surfboard and mountainbike rentals, hostels, cafes, little variety stores, beachware shops, banks and Spanish language schools that respond to visitors´ needs

The different beaches near San Juan del Sur have spectacular coastlines with that make each one an inviting place to visit in search of a remote paradise. Especially surfers, like the challenge of the great waves and swells that result from the dramatic rock formations along this coastline.
